Founded by medical sociologist Dr. Leakhena Nou, Applied Social Research Institute of Cambodia (ASRIC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit grass-roots organization is broadly committed to supporting the global Cambodian community in light of its genocide. ASRIC is institutionally affiliated with the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University. A pragmatic research institution, ASRIC is engaged in developing knowledge to that end that can be easily disseminated. Additionally, ASRIC is dedicated to utilizing community participatory research as foundation for programming and outreach. The scope of ASRIC’s pragmatic research includes developing juridical dialogues, communal engagements, and scholarly interactions with and about Cambodians both in Cambodia and in the diaspora. From the rupture of the Killing Fields to the recent push toward reconciliation, from individual stories of survival to larger narratives of potential community health, ASRIC brings together advocates, academics, and community members through programs designed to educate and empower a group that must still contend with genocide and its troubling aftermath. Mindful of such traumatic legacies, ASRIC is dedicated to increasing the cultural, individual, and collective strengths of the Cambodian population through reflexive, symbolic understandings of community dynamics and dimensions.
